DETROIT – Fifty-four high school graduating seniors will receive college scholarships at this year’s annual Metro Detroit Youth Day, July 14, on Belle Isle. In addition, 30 high school students will be honored for outstanding leadership and community service.

Metro Detroit Youth Day is a full day of fun, games, contests, celebrities and free food for children between 8 and 15 years of age. Organizers of the 28th annual event expect more than 35,000 youngsters to participate. It is possibly the largest event of its kind in the nation. The day was originally conceived as a way to bridge relations between African American inner city rsidents and those who often retailed in the city but lived outside its borders. Arab American Ed Deeb, chairman and coordinator of Youth Day and president of the Michigan Food and Beverage Association, along with radio newsman Jerry Blocker and Tom Fox began the tradition and Deeb works year round to promote and grow the event.

JORGE LORENZO made it four in a row yesterday as he stormed to pole ahead of today’s German MotoGP at Sachsenring on his spare bike.

The Spaniard bounced back from an engine blow around halfway through the hour-long qualifying session to set a hot lap of 1.21.817mins with just over a minute remaining.

The FIAT Yamaha rider had ditched his number one machine at the side of the track after suffering a massive blow-out 35 minutes into the session, depositing a huge streak of oil down the main straight as flames licked out from the fairings.

Seconds later Randy De Puniet’s LCR Honda and the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 bike of Ben Spies hit Lorenzo’s oil, sending the pair crashing to the ground.

As they slid off the track, De Puniet collided with Spies’ bike. The session was stopped for 20minutes as marshals rushed to clear up as much of the spill as possible, while the Frenchman was stretchered from the side of the track.

Returning to the garage clearly in pain, De Puniet received a quick visit from championship leader Lorenzo to check he was okay, before heading off for X-rays to confirm nothing was broken. He was declared fit to ride today, although was unable to complete qualifying.

Lorenzo, who has taken three poles in the last three rounds and backed them up with a trio of victories, admitted he was pleased with the result but sorry about the oil spill.

“It’s a pity that Spies and De Puniet hit the ground because of my engine problem, but I couldn’t do anything more about it after it happened,” he said.
